Chapter Seventy Seven: Testimony on the Treaty of Gawkins

/ Quoted as follows: At his best, man is the noblest of all animals; separated from law and justice he is the worst. - Plato /

"Your Rightful Honors, we would like to call the Secretary of Parochial Concerns to the witness stand."

The petitioners were reviewing their notes at the last minute; the lawyers are very determined to pin down the main points of this petition so that nothing shall pertain to it in an unorganized attempt to tweak its claims, including disprove any rationality or logic consistent with past cases forming the court's jurisprudence or opinion alone, in many other causes of action that came before it.

As soon as the witness was sworn-in to tell the truth under the pain of perjury, the petitioners started asking the required testimony. Everybody was holding their breath in excitement. This needs to be good.

"Mr. Secretary, do you share the same opinion that this case is covered by the Treaty of Gawkins as an amendment to the constitution?"

The Secretary of Parochial Concerns was anticipating this question, and he knew that this testimony is important for the case. He cannot make an error of judgment at this moment. Not that his own life is in danger.

"Yes. The Treaty specifies the check and balances needed to diffuse the adverse effect in the sources of power within the grasp of the localities that constitute the Commission as a whole."

"Wonderful," the counsel for the petitioners said, ready to continue his line of questioning. "Are you in the same position to conclude that when enough supplies are missing from the established logistics in the Commission because of trade barriers imposed on the supply chain by any party thereof, then this protective policy breach the Treaty of Gawkins?"

"Objection!" the main Barrister for the respondents immediately sprang from his seat. "Irrelevant. The Treaty of Gawkins pertain to a different subject matter."

"Your Rightful Honors," the counsel replied to address the objection. "The petitioners are trying to establish that the same controversy that led to the Treaty of Gawkins is parallel to this case, and therefore relevant to resolve the controversy being alleged."

"The objection is overruled. The witness will answer the question."

The Secretary of Parochial Concerns returned his gaze from the bench to the petitioners; he nodded wanly. "Yes. As long as the matter pertains to the sources of power as stated in the Treaty, then it qualifies as a controversy that may be resolved by the same principles enshrined thereof."

"And do you think this particular case must be resolved according to the standard set forth in the said amendment?"

He nodded vigorously. "Yes. I think so. This is my opinion on the matter."

The Secretary of Parochial Concerns seemed incompetent in the way he responded to the questions, but he was keeping his composure all throughout the direct examination, hoping no one will ever notice all the battles he was fighting within.
