Chapter 140: The Road to Gapworth's Home
Gapworth's motive for procuring a Kenwit Flask was still similarly unclear to Theo, but he has a strong hunch on the reason why the gullible Otter went through a lot of perilous travel and even braving all the troubles just to insist on getting one. The motivation for this adventure, although truly odd, is intrinsic to a creature similar to Gapsworth's nature. His dubious feeling is now starting to make sense.
"You cannot sell dreams to a person who endured nightmares, right, Gapsworth?" Theo asked the silent Otter. They are still walking through that long stretch of a main road upon leaving the Principality of Kenwit north of the borderline, on the way to where Gapsworth told him where he is headed home.
"But the truth will always set us free," Theo then added before Gapsworth could have the opportunity to respond.
"Well, I guess that is true, too, Master Theo," Gapsworth replied with a little giggle, trying to sound casual. "But to know the truth, one must rely on the power of love and endure the trepidation of terrible dreams. I know this to be the basis of facts. But, what is the connection there, Master? Why is that necessary?"
"Because the truth alone is not an absolute substance to be considered on its own. Anybody can always claim to tell the truth, but most of them insist in doing so with the malice of a two-pronged tongue. They use it shamelessly to condemn, to slander his opponent, to commit treason, to damage a person's life and his literature and art, to poison the comprehensive style of his works. The truth that is to be revealed, in order to serve its rightful extent, must be accompanied with the principles and complexity of love; that is what makes the truth impeccable in its purest form."
"Purest form? What does it mean, Master Theo?"
"There is a well-known reagent that can be used to test all the existing metaphysical substances in the universe, and in order to know the potency of love in the deepest degree of motivations in the pursuit of the noun and its collateral peripheral of verbs."
The Otter laughed weakly. He understood the explanation with a familiar comprehension. Obviously, he already heard this lecture before.
"I guess you are right, Master. But I also believe that love is more than just a dream. It transcends boundaries."
Theo nodded his head with a look of concern all over his face. He is still quite skeptical on ascertaining Gapworth's true motivation for this long and arduous journey. He cannot simply risk his life in this manner without immediate compelling reasons.
"Why do you need the elixir for, Gapsworth? Do you hold a specimen of dreams?" He finally asked the question. "You can always tell me. I am a fully licensed Publisher, after all; I am always here to listen, and I am also willing to help."
Gapsworth's face suddenly lost the look of an amazed creature. He simply bowed his head low, and the breeze of sadness filled the surrounding air. It was obviously a serious matter for him. Theo somehow triggered the lonely emotion from the joyful Otter.
"Well?" Theo asked again. "I am waiting."
Gapsworth then flashed a wide smile after an awkward silence. He knows that he is in the presence of the right company. He cleared his throat, then speak.
"I needed to know the secrets of the Canterbury Tales."
