Chapter 101: Love, A Mystery
Gapsworth was just very happy that he has met his "master" Theo to accompany him to the Principality of Kenwit and buy a flask for his true Master (who is the reason why he travelled this far), presumably where a love "concoction" may be freely contained without the danger of contaminating its potent solution.
"Master Theo, can I ask you question?" Gapsworth finally asked after so much hesitation. "If it's okay?"
"Of course, Gapsworth," Theo said gleefuly. "What is it that you would like to know?"
Gapsworth cleared his throat. Both of them continued walking.
"Well, I was just wondering," the Otter started his query with pure enthusiasm. "If love never fails, then why do other people suffer when they are in love?"
Theo smiled.
"Why did you ask?"
"My Master is in love, but he is suffering," said Gapsworth.
"Love never fails, Gapsworth. It is the people who inflict pain upon themselves. You see, people act based on their instincts, and they usually attribute many things to being in love. Usually, they are blinded by their sight and emotions. But, Gapsworth, the law of love transcends human understanding, because it is universal despite one's circumstances. People experience the pain based on what they did while in a relationship, not from love itself."
Gapsworth grinned wanly. He was glad Theo was answering his question.
"I still do not understand, Master Theo."
Theo laughed so hard. Gapsworth's face was all confused, but delightful that the conversation was getting interesting.
"Suffering in itself is meaningless, but suffering in the service of others is love. How about you? What do you understand about love?" It was Theo's turn to ask playfully.
Gapsworth responded almost immediately.
"When you make someone happy, I think that's love. Everybody deserves to be happy. When you love someone, you just have to make them happy. And when they are lonely, you accompany them. Pain becomes bearable that way. I believe that love is the antidote to everything, especially in dealing with the poison of death."
Theo nodded in agreement.
"You are not far from the truth, Gapsworth. Most people are confused, that is all. And that is how they selfishly die."
